Habitat Assessments
Details
A Habitat Assessment is a detailed evaluation of the vegetation and environmental conditions on your site. Moving beyond a simple site walkover, this assessment uses the UK Habitat Classification (UKHab) system—the industry standard required for modern planning applications and Environmental Statements.
What we do:
Our ecologists meticulously map the site, categorising habitats into distinct types such as woodland, grassland, or wetland. We record dominant plant species, assess habitat health, and identify "indicators of quality" that determine the ecological value of the land. This data provides the essential foundation for more complex requirements, such as Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) calculations and Local Nature Recovery Strategies.
Why it’s essential:
Accurate Baselines: You cannot improve what you haven’t measured. A robust habitat map is the starting point for all mitigation and enhancement plans.
Identifying Rare Habitats: We identify "Habitats of Principal Importance" (Section 41 habitats) that require specific protection under the NERC Act (2006).
Design Integration: By understanding the existing landscape, we help your design team integrate high-value natural features into the masterplan, often reducing the need for costly off-site compensation.
Whether you need a baseline for a small plot or a complex assessment for a large estate, our habitat surveys provide the technical rigour needed to satisfy planners and environmental regulators alike.
